Quests

A quest is a space for something you’re trying to get done. Each quest has its own plans, tasks, board, and members. Use one for a big project, one for the household, one for a trip — however many suits you — and switch between them freely.

Finding your way around quests

How you move between quests depends on where you are:

  • When you’re not in a quest, the top bar has a Quests link. It opens Your quests — a list of everything you’re part of. From here you can jump into any quest, create a new one, and accept or decline invitations to quests other people have shared with you.
  • When you’re inside a quest, the quest’s name sits in the top bar with a small next to it. Click the name to open the quest switcher — a list of your other quests plus a New quest… field. On a phone, the switcher sits at the top of the menu instead, and tapping the quest title in the bar just scrolls you back to the top.
Click the quest's name to switch to another quest — or start a new one.

Creating a quest

  • Your very first quest is created when you start: on the landing page, type what you’re trying to do and press Begin — no email, no password. Plan afoot drops you straight into your new quest under a pseudonymous account (a playful handle like wedding-purple-otter, which you can change any time). Add a sign-in method whenever you’re ready — see Your account.
  • From Your quests, press New quest, give it a name, and Create quest.
  • While you’re in a quest, click the quest name (the in the top bar) to open the switcher, and use the New quest… field at the bottom.

There’s no prescribed way to organise — one big quest or many small ones, whatever fits how you think. How many you can keep at once depends on your plan — see Your account.

Switching quests

From Your quests, pick any quest to switch into it. While you’re already in a quest, click the quest name in the top bar to open the switcher and choose another quest from the list. Either way, Plan afoot remembers where you were, so next time you arrive it takes you back to the quest and view you used last.

Renaming a quest

Renaming lives in Settings, not the switcher. Open the menu, choose Settings, and edit Quest name — this is available to managers only.

Inviting people to a quest

Open the menu and choose Members. If you can manage the quest, you’ll see a field to invite someone by email address or @handle: type it in and press invite. People you invite by email get a message with a link to join; people already on Plan afoot can be added by their handle.

Pending invitations are listed above the field, where you can resend or revoke them until they’re accepted.

Joining a quest

When someone invites you, the invitation appears in your Your quests list to accept or decline — and the email link takes you straight to a page where you can join. Sharing a quest lets members work on it together: adding and moving tasks, leaving notes, and taking on assignments.

Leaving a quest

Open the menu, choose Members, and use Leave quest at the bottom of the list. What happens next depends on your role:

  • If others remain, you simply leave; if you’re a manager and other managers remain, you’ll type the quest’s name to confirm first.
  • If you’re the last person who can manage the quest, you’ll be asked to hand it off to another member first so it isn’t left without an owner.
  • If you’re the only member, leaving removes the quest and all its data, so you’ll be asked to confirm.

If you ever delete your account, the same rules apply automatically: shared quests carry on without you, and quests where you’re the only member are removed.
