Keyboard shortcuts
Plan afoot helps you do, not just plan — and once you know your way around, the keyboard is the fastest way to move. These shortcuts work anywhere inside a quest.
A note on screen readers. We’re still improving the screen-reader experience. The shortcuts below are built for keyboard navigation today; more is coming.
Hold Alt (called Option on a Mac) together with the key shown.
Getting around

Moving cards on the board with the keyboard
The board supports a full keyboard drag. You never need a mouse to move a card.
- Press Tab to step into the board — one card gets a focus ring. (Press Tab again to step back out; the board never traps your focus.)
- Use the arrow keys to move that focus: ↑ / ↓ between cards in a lane, ← / → between lanes.
- Press Space to pick up the focused card. Plan afoot announces that you’ve picked it up.
- While you’re holding it:
- ↑ / ↓ move the card up or down within its lane.
- ← / → move it into the lane on either side.
- Each move is saved as you go.
- Press Space again to drop the card where it is. Or press Esc to cancel — the card returns to where it started.
- Not moving anything? Press Enter on a focused card to open it.
Closing things
Press Esc to close an open card or the cheat-sheet, or to clear a selection.
In the editor
When you’re writing a task or plan body, formatting has shortcuts too. On a Mac use ⌘; elsewhere use Ctrl.
- ⌘B bold, ⌘I italic, ⌘E inline code, ⌘⌥X strikethrough
- ⌘⌥1–⌘⌥6 headings, ⌘⌥0 plain paragraph
- ⌘⌥7 numbered list, ⌘⌥8 bullet list, ⌘⇧B quote, ⌘⌥C code block
- Tab / ⇧Tab indent or outdent a list item
- ⇧Enter a hard line break; ⌘Z undo, ⌘⇧Z redo
- In a table, Tab / ⇧Tab move between cells
- Alt + Shift + ↑ / ↓ move the current block up or down — the keyboard equivalent of dragging its handle
- Alt + F10 jump focus into the open floating toolbar (announces that none is open if nothing’s showing)
